Ubuntu Studio 7.10 (Gutsy)
As of the Gutsy release, Ubuntu Studio no longer requires its own repository. This means that all the programs and files you need to install Ubuntu Studio are already available in the official Ubuntu repos! Adding Studio to your existing Ubuntu install is very simple:
The previous command will install the complete Ubuntu Studio. If you’re aren’t interested in a certain medium, such as video editing, simply remove ubuntustudio-video from the list.
You’ll have to set the Ubuntu Studio theme and login window artwork manually. This can be easily done with the System > Preferences > Appearance and System > Administration > Login Window dialogs :

Ubuntu Studio 7.04 (Feisty)
The following information is now outdated. Ubuntu Studio no longer requires its own repository. Please use the updated methods above.
If you already have Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) installed you may not be interested in creating a whole new partition to install Ubuntu Studio. The first thing you’ll want to do is add the Ubuntu Studio repository to your sources list with these two commands :
sudo su -c ‘echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list’
wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
Now that the Ubuntu Studio repository has been added, use Synaptic Package Manager to search for ubuntu studio and download the following packages :
ubuntustudio-audio
ubuntustudio-audio-plugins
ubuntustudio-desktop
ubuntustudio-graphics
ubuntustudio-video
You could also quickly install the Ubuntu Studio packages with a simple apt-get command :
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-desktop ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video
Don’t worry about the other ubuntustudio packages. All required packages will be installed automatically thanks to the meta-packages above. Once the install is complete you will need to reboot. Ubuntu Studio has now been integrated into your Feisty system.
If you want to use the Ubuntu Studio theme you will need to select it manually from System > Preferences > Themes. If you just want the Ubuntu Studio theme for your Ubuntu desktop, simply download the ubuntustudio-theme package.
One last instruction and then we are done! If you want to get the most speed and performance out of your audio setup, be sure to issue this final command :
sudo su -c ‘echo @audio - rtprio 99 >> /etc/security/limits.conf’
Here we have simply added the line @audio - rtprio 99 to the end of the file limits.conf. This configuration is added by default when installing from the Ubuntu Studio DVD.

Now you tell us!
I did it this way weeks ago already. Even with my slow DSL it up and running flawlessly within an hour.
Does this install the realtime kernel?
A-dawg.
A-Dawg, Ubuntu Studio comes with a LowLatency kernel by default. For instructions on installing the Real Time kernel, go here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RealTime
Isn’t there also something needed to give the audio system realtime priority? Or does that happen automatically with the LowLatency kernel?
Ok. now lets get on with the audio pack. How do i test my usb-audio? can i know for sure my alsa is working? how do i setup jack? how does ardour work? how about midi?
Oh, sorry im just a little impatient. I have no succes with the audio pack yet, so i’m really relying on your walk-throughs. Your doing a great job!
I’ve got Edgy and i keep getting errors when trying to install it
unknown id deb
@Eric: you’ll need to upgrade to Feisty.
The final command results in this:
bash: /etc/security/limits.conf’: Permission denied
maybe I am missing something not so obvious to this noob
here’s what i get with the first line:
kadag@kadag-desktop:~$ sudo su -c ’echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list’
bash: /etc/apt/sources.list’: Permission denied
could someone help?
kadagtry typing it in manually if you are copy pasting… for some reason certain commands hate to be pasted? just our experience
hey, glad I stumbled onto you guys.
is there any negative to installing studio this way or any difference at all? Reason I ask is that in #ubuntustudio on IRC they said it wasnt recommended, but I would much rather do it this way.
thanks
I used this procedure and everything seemed to work except for unbuntustudio-desktop. I get a package not found error. I used Synaptics to search for it and couldn’t find it that way either. I also can’t find the unbuntustudio-theme.
Am I doing something wrong or have these packages been removed? (I’m a Linux rookie so it’s entirely possible I screwed up somewhere)
rookie to rookie here, I think ubuntustudio-desktop is what they call a metapackage, meaning it’s not actually a package in it’s self, just sort of a package containing packages (which you have installed already) and I think the theme can be found at gnome-look.org
hope this helps
Just done all this, only problem being the copy/paste not working. Rebooted, but can’t see any difference at all, Where is all the new content? Even the theme is missing. Wha?
Is there something else I need to do?
im a window user…and im done wit it..im tired of all da adware and other stupid stuff..i just order Ubuntu 7.04….i need help witch some stuff..like dat commands they saying here..is it easy or you gotta actually go into da system and paste da commad..either way ima install Ubuntu i just want info so i know what im getting myself into ya dig..so plz e mail me @ G_J9@hotmail.com and let me know how Ubuntu works..thanks!
@dysonsphere and Kadag,
I had this same problem, you need to use a root terminal for the computer to let you do it.
go into a normal terminal and type: alacarte
a menu manager app should start up, click on system tools in the left pane and check off root terminal, it should then appear in your menu after you close the window.
use that terminal to do the commands, its a bit easier since you dont have to worry about giving yourself permissions
Hey ya people. As with GJ, i got tired of the spy ware, ad-ware and the windows update stuff that i decided to start shifting to Linux, specifically Ubuntu.
I have Ubuntu Server Edition 7.04 installed on an old computer i found. It’s a 333Mhz CPU, 128MB RAM, no monitor, no keyboard, no sound, 8.4GB HDD, 20GB HDD and one 100mbs network card.
I have Squid running on it to keep my internet bandwidth down and to help with my internet quota usage(in new zealand!!), BIND9 installed and running, Apache2, MySQL, PHP. I administer it through SSH, using PUTTY.
I had Ubuntu 7.04 Desktop installed on another one of my pc’s, but right now i’m upgrading it to Ubuntu Studio as i do some DV and Audio editing, and making creating DVD’s.
I currently use PhotoshopCS2, Vegas7.0, Adobe Encore and Adobe Audition for editing and creating my DVD’s.
I’m hoping Ubuntu Studio is able to replace or help me move to Ubuntu by giving me programs which i can use to accomplish what i currently do…
can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!
You can copy and paste by using Shift+Insert
I am having the same problem that kadag is having. I tried copy and pasting the sudo terminal command and it gave me the same error code. So, I took the above advice and hand=typed it in and it simply goes back to the empty command line without doing anything. I need help.
Also, is there anyway to make Ubuntu Studio a part of the package manager, like the other distros are (i.e. KDE, Xubuntu, Edubuntu…)
Will ubustu run on a dualcore amd 64 machine, or is it only built for 32-bit machines?
Will there be a 64-bit version to?
I almost have this finished but I can’t get ubuntu audio to install properly.
It seemed to work fine in Kubuntu, but now I have errors…
Unpacking ubuntustudio-audio (from …/ubuntustudio-audio_0.2_i386.deb) …
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/ardour_1%3a2.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I saw people are still having a problem pasting the commands (sudo su -c ’echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list’)
I did a test and found that you you change the single quotes before “echo” and after “list” from to then it works, if you look really closely they are different characters…in fact I don’t even know what characters they are.
sudo su -c ’echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list’
to
sudo su -c ‘echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list’
worked for me
hmm it deleted part of my post, I was trying to say change the single quotes from ( ’ )
to ( ‘ )
Here is a cautionary tale. I upgraded Kubuntu 7.04 with a working proprietary nvidia binary driver for my laptop with a GeForce 440 Go 32M to Ubuntu Studio using these instructions. On reboot I my xserver was broken and I had to use a console. I wasn’t able to get it to work and had to go back to the free “nv” driver to use the gui desktop. Unfortunately I also up graded my desktop Kubuntu at the same time with the same results. Both seemed to work until I restartec. So far I haven’t gotten accelerated graphics to work on either system.
Apparently with proprietary drivers when up upgrade your kernel the proprietary modules are not included in the upgrade. The laptop was easy to fix but my desktop beige box had dual monitors using TwinView and required a bit more work to get the dual monitors working correctly. Just restoring an old copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and running nvidia-settings wasn’t enough but after playing around…
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
then
gksudo nvidia-settings
did the trick for me.
to people with problem with query. Try to type them withou su -c, just sudo echo … maybe it will help
Great!! Just what I needed!
Thx guys! ^^
on amd64 machines there seems to be a bug and you cannot install ubuntustudio. We are not offered desktop or theme and more importantly we cannot install ubuntustudio.-audio because it has a conflict with supercollider which I assume from some google searches cannot install in 64bit.
Any new news on this?
what you could do otherwise if you cant get the first command to work properly is to open up a terminal, type
sudo synaptic
click settings ->
repositories->
third party software tab->
add->
paste the adress deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main
->click close, and it will ask you to reload.
you reload and get an error, no worries.
to get auth key (for the error you just got)
in a terminal type (in one line)
wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
after that its just a matter of downloading the packages and installing them, as posted above:
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-desktop ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video
sit back and relax, then reboot when asked to reboot.
I’m running Feisty. If I search for Ubuntu Studio in Synaptic, I find ubuntustudio audio, audio-plugins, graphics, launcher, and video. Can I just select the packages in Synaptic rather than go through the apt-get install routine?
Hi,
Can this upgrade work on the Feisty 64 AMD version?
Can I get the theme only? I mean is there a way to have a “Studio Skin” on my Fiesty?
Thanks!
That’s right — the cut and paste won’t work, but retyping it will, because the quotes aren’t correct in the example above. They’ll be OK when you type them, though.
Has anyone tried installing Ubuntu Studio on 7.10? I tried with the Release Candidate DVD, and the window borders looked like Gilouche, but black, instead of the nice Studio borders…
Hey Hey,
Do any of you know if this “trick” will be made available for Gutsy?
thanks!
w
whats up with http://archive.ubuntustudio.org ? I cannot reach it. Just wanted to upgrade from feisty to gutsy, but the ubuntustudio package server seems to be down. so, no ubustu updates for now. pity…
How can I upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 from the DVD ?
Grateful for help. Very much a newbie. Couldn’t upgrade online - always a medibuntu repo problem.
